Earth Day 4/22/20
Added: 4/13/20 Did you know that 50 years ago in 1970, we celebrated the first Earth Day on April 22nd? That's right! 50 years! Can you skip count by 10's to 50? 10, 20, 30, 40, 50... 5 groups of 10! What about by 5's? 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50... 10 groups of 5! Earth Day is celebrated EVERY year on April 22nd ALL around the WORLD! Not just the United States. Let's think back to where we did our project 'me on the map'.
Our Planet: Earth Our Continent: North America Our Country: United States of America Our State: Michigan (Upper) Our County: Iron County Our Town/City: Crystal Falls
Why is Earth Day important? We can thank a man named Gaylord Nelson for the idea of Earth Day. He was a Senator from Wisconsin! A Senator is a person who we elect, like the president, to help create laws for our nation, the U.S.A. Remember the Constitution? Highest form of law, they help protect and enforce it. Senator Nelson saw how much pollution was being created by big factories, automobiles, and gases. He wanted to make everyone else see how damaging these things could be to our Earth. You see, we have to take care of ourselves by eating healthy foods, keeping ourselves clean and making sure we have all our needs (not wants!). The Earth is the same way! The pollution we were/are creating is like unhealthy food for the Earth and it's inhabitants (things that live on Earth). Where do you think trash goes? They go to places called landfills. Big holes that are dug in the ground where all our garbage is placed... this is like the Earth not taking a shower or a bath! It can be really gross and dirty! This is why we recycle! Recycling is when you reuse or refurbish (turn them into something different) items. Recycling is like giving the Earth a bath! The more we recycle the less waste, or garbage go into the landfills. What can be recycled here locally? Click here to see details about Iron River Recycling. Earth Day helps us to remember that we need to take responsibility for the planet we live on and help keep it clean to make sure everyone is safe and healthy!
~Have broken crayons?! Recycle them! 1. Remove paper from crayons 2. Cut/Break them smaller if needed 3. Place crayons in a muffin tin for baking (mix colors if you want!) 4. Bake them at 250°F for 15-20 minutes, until the crayons are melted. 5. Carefully remove the muffin tin from the oven without mixing the colors. Allow the crayons to cool on the counter and then put them in the fridge for 30 minutes. 6. Remove the crayons from the fridge, turn the muffin tin upside down and give it a smack on the counter to pop the crayons out. 7. Use Paper bags from the grocery store and make works of art!
Project Challenge: Can you find recyclable items around the house and create your own Robot, Spaceship, or Rocket?! Make it Silly! Get Creative with what items you use! Don't forget to send me pictures!
Recycle toilet paper rolls by making them into projectors! What you need: Markers, plastic wrap/bags, toilet paper roll(s), scissors, hair tie/rubber band, also a flashlight (I used a phone light).
Challenge: Create your own story and turn it into a movie on the ceiling! Make a few projectors with different characters/settings and put on a show for your family! Maybe even create the story with your family! Invite others to participate in case you need more than one projector up at a time!
Remember, Characters are people, animals, or creatures in a story. Setting is where and when your story takes place (outside, inside, in a house, at a park, day time, night time, morning, afternoon...)
Author Hans Christian Andersen 4/8/20
S.S : It was Hans Christian Andersen's birthday April 2, 1805. He was born in Denmark. He was the original AUTHOR of The Little Mermaid. Posted below is a read aloud of his work. Not the Disney version! Listen to his story (posted below) and notice the difference between the original and the Disney remake.
Pick your activity! Choose one (1) or complete them all!
Challenge for reading/writing: Which story do you like best? Why do you prefer that version of the story? What was your favorite part of the original story? What was your favorite part from the Disney movie/version?
Music: Make up your own song for the original story or sing a song from the Disney movie! You can write down your song or video tape yourself singing and send it to me!
For fun, Dress up as your favorite character from the Disney movie or pick a character from the Original story and dress the way you think they look!
Mrs. Davis chose to "dress up" and sing a song from the Disney movie: The Little Mermaid.
I picked the character Ursula because every time we watch the movie my kids always tell me I'm her. They enjoy when I sing along too... hope you enjoy as well!
